Boat Race - Chinese Dragon Boat Festival

Chinese Dragon Boat Festival has had a history of more than 2,000 years, which is also known as the Duanwu Festival, and it falls on the 25th June 2020. It occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional lunar calendar. The picture below shows some tranditional elements of Dragon Boat Festival.

Dragon boat racing is an indispensable part of the festival, held all over the country. As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoes pulling the oars harmoniously and hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.

There is a simple and fun boat race game you could do with your kid at home to celebrate Chinese Dragon Boat Festival.

Supplies:

  • Paper boat – use thick square paper and coat with wax. If you don’t know how to make a paper boat, simply google or YouTube it, there are so many tutorials of making it.

  • Straw –thicker straws work better

  • Gutters – from DIY shops, or plastic tubes

  • Whistle

Directions:

  • Fill up the gutters with water.

  • If there is more than one kid, split them into groups.

  • Give each kid a straw and a paper boat.

  • Set a judge. The judge blows the whistle to start the game.
