Five Movement Games

April 4, 2020

The children also need to do some exercise at home. There are five quick and easy movement activities. They improve children’s coordination and teach body awareness.

Ankle Walk

Line the children up on one side of the room (parents can join in the children).

Ask them to bend over and hold onto their ankles.

Have them walk to the other side of the room while holding onto their ankles.

Teddy Bear

This popular children’s rhyme is good for quick exercise.

Recite the poem and perform the actions.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, climb the stairs.

Teddy bear, teddy bear, say “Goodnight”.

Stay in Place

Give each child a piece of masking tape to place on the floor.

Ask them to stand on the tape and move their bodies without moving their legs.

Experiment by moving arms, necks, heads, mouths and hips.

Play instrumental music while the children move.

Moving in Space

Ask the children to move around the room in different ways.

Walk slowly and softly

Walk fast and softly

Jump low

March backwards

Walk like a robot

Hop on one foot with arms out straight

This game can go on for as long as you want it to

Wind Movements

Talk about how the wind blows many things.

Ask the children to name things blown by the wind.

Have the children pretend to:

Be leaves and flutter to the ground slowly.

Be raindrops falling to the earth.

Be feathers blown by the wind.

Be snowflakes blown by the wind.
